Golden Droplet
Published in Paperback by Arrow (A Division of Random House Group) (08 December, 1988)
Average review score:

The Golden DropletThis was the first of Michel Tournier's book that I had read in translation and not in the original French, but I was not disappointed. Tournier has the capacity to relate closely to the cultures in which his stories are set and to describe in a very believable way the reactions of his characters when they move from one culture to another. This is the story of a young boy whose fortunes take him from his native North Africa to the streets of Paris. Prepare for culture shock: if you have only ever taken a tour bus round that great city, imagine this young lad leading a camel through the streets at night looking for a slaughterhouse (in the end the animal has a pleasanter fate!). The Golden Droplet in the title is a jewel that the lad tries to hold onto and in some ways it decides the direction of his fate. I loved this book. I hope others will find it and read it, or better BUY IT here.

The Golden Empire

From the back cover of the bookThree proud generations, whose passion for the land was surpassed only by their passion for each other... It was the last of the giant California ranches, and one family shaped its destiny for generations...Leander Champion Buckles III dominated a room the way mountains dominate the plains. He loved Cira Pico McCartney, the beautiful half-Spanish girl whose dark eyes were flecked with gold. Though they could never marry, together they would forge a Golden Empire. Over the years the passion of the Buckles family nourished and built the land. And, as new gernerations grew up and took over, it was the same human passion that ultimately threatened to destroy the Golden Empire.

The Golden Era: West by Rail With the Harvey Girls
Published in Paperback by Texas Tech University Press (May, 1997)
Average review score:

The Golden Era : West by Rail With the Harvey GirlsThis paper doll book covers the years from 1922 to 1927. In addition to the five 8-inch dolls and their outfits, there is a journal. The journal tells the story of the characters and the clothing they wear. Each doll has a variety of costumes including uniforms, everyday wear, and dressy clothes. Various hairstyles are provided for the females. This book is very well done. The dolls and clothes are printed on glossy cardstock and paper. The colors appear to be the correct hues for the time. Beside each costume is a short description with fashion notes and the year. The fashion notes vary in contents. They may contain the materials used, the names of the colors, the source of the clothing, or when it was worn. Many of the outfits came from the Sears catalog. Unlike many paper doll books for the Twenties, this one shows ordinary people not movie stars or the rich and famous. The book also includes a brief glossary of fashion terms and a bibliography. The back cover has a map showing where the events of the journal occurred and a picture of Fred Harvey. It packs a lot of information in its few pages. After carefully removing the pages of dolls and costumes you can reassemble the book and have the complete journal. If you cut out the fashion notes and attach them to the back of the outfits, you will have them for future reference. If you're interested in fashion of the Twenties, the history of the West or the Harvey Girls get this book. (I was personally disappointed in the book only because I wanted the Harvey Girls of an earlier period. The description of the book didn't include the dates when I ordered it.)

Golden Fire (Heartfire)

Really got to know the caracters! This was a fun read. Ms. Jones takes you for sorrow to joy and touches on every emotion in between. I laughed and cried. I have always been interested in the wagon trains heading west and this book takes you all the way form Independance to the Sierras. I would have liked to learn more about Seneca's brothers though.

Great SeriesJim DeFelice, did a great job telling this story in all three books of this series. Based on historcal fact and some fiction, the characters come to life. You get to know them, and wonder what will happen next. I wish he had done more in this series, and taken it to the end of the war.

The Golden Fleece

Average review score:

A true "theater of the mind" experienceThe Golden Fleece by Padriac Column (1881-1972) is a complete and unabridged (10 hours, 8 compact discs) audiobook based on the classic Greek legend of Jason, the Argonauts, and their quest for the fabled Golden Fleece. A dramatic and spirited saga of an immortal legend, chronicling the exploits and soul-searing conflicts of mortals, monsters, and the gods themselves. Fred Williams's superb narrative skills brings Padriac Column's epic tale to live in a true "theater of the mind" experience while the compact disc format features tracks every 3 minutes for bookmarking. The Golden Fleece would make a perfect addition to any personal or community library audiobook collection.

Page-turner. I could not put it down.A classic! Mysterious and intriging. It is a short read and fast page turner. Like many of Lefevre's books it is set at the turn of the 20th century and with a finance background. It complements the more popular Reminiscences book, but shows Lefevre in a different light - that of the mystery writer. It is almost sinister in its plot.

The Golden Flower: A Taino Myth from Puerto Rico
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (March, 1995)
Average review score:

The Golden FlowerI have read this story to second and third graders and the story keeps them entertained and interested. They have fun predicting what will happen next. The illustrations are true works of art. It can be used to introduce Puerto Rico and also to show that there were native people living in all areas of the "new world" before Europeans arrived. It can be a little tricky discussing a creation myth in a public school setting but the positives outweigh the negatives with this story.
